Almost a decade after his first major weight loss journey, Georg found himself slipping back into old habits. He was gaining weight and feeling further from the athlete he once was, competing regularly in Obstacle Course Races (OCRs) and half marathons.

The Freeletics Transformation Challenge gave him the structure and motivation to reignite his passion and reclaim the version of himself he knew was still inside. Here’s his story:

“Before the Freeletics Transformation Challenge even began, my story actually started almost ten years ago – back when the very first Apple Watch was released. I got an Apple Watch from work to try, and at that time, I was at my heaviest weight.

One of the apps I tried was a calorie tracker. Out of curiosity, I started counting calories. Very quickly, I realized that the portions allowed were way too small. And then I realized that if I trained, I could eat more. So I started training.

I began with jogging. Slow at first, every other day. And after about two weeks, a friend asked me if I had ever tried Freeletics. I had heard of it, but honestly, I was scared to try. Eventually, I gave in.

My first workout was Aphrodite: 150 Burpees, 150 Squats, 150 Situps.

I was dying. I sweated, I cursed, and it took a full hour of my life. But somehow, it stuck with me.

Five months later, I had lost over 30 kilos. The year after that, I was running half marathons and started signing up for OCRs. I've been doing sports ever since.

But after my last Spartan Trifecta Weekend in Kaprun, I started to slack off and gained weight. Most of my “daily exercise” turned into 30–50 minutes on the elliptical. My diet was bad – too much candy and too much stress because of the weight gain.”

Starting over with discipline

“Joining the Transformation Challenge gave me the push I needed. I cleaned up my eating, cut out candy, and worked out consistently again. My goal for the Transformation Challenge was clear: get back to 85 kg and be able to take on OCRs with ease. I was looking forward to losing weight, fitting into my clothes again, and being able to comfortably put on my socks and shoes again.

Going into the challenge, I felt energized and confident. No doubts. Having Sina, the nutritionist, monitoring my food – and being strict about it – really helped keep me motivated.

By the end of the challenge, I imagined myself feeling strong, fit, and genuinely happy with my body again. I will have developed new habits, like drinking lemon water in the morning – strange at first, but surprisingly good. I will finally have dropped poor habits like eating candy.

The biggest shift, though, would be if I could just finally get back on track… hopefully for the next ten years.”

Transforming inside and out

“Midway through the challenge, everything changed massively. I am working out daily – not just the low-intensity elliptical sessions from before, but real training. Now, I’ve started running again. At least 5k every day, usually more. At the moment, I don’t feel good if I don’t work out.

I’ve already lost almost 20 kilos. I’m fitter, faster, and have more endurance. My resting heart rate decreased again… Clothes from long before fit me again, and even clothes I had bought only six weeks earlier were already too big.

People started telling me I looked good, and I could finally say that I liked how I looked, too.

But it wasn’t all perfect. I was hangry a lot and snapped at the people I love. My diet felt a bit lonely, since my family wasn’t participating. Still, I knew that my goal of easily running the Spartan Beast in Kulmbach was achievable, so I kept going.”

Surpassing goals and fitter than ever

“After the Transformation Challenge, my relationship with fitness continued to grow. I ran a lot. I wanted to get fit again, so I pushed myself with more intense workouts. Dieting felt familiar.

In the end, I actually overachieved. My original goal was to go from 105.6 kg to 85 kg. Instead, I dropped under 82 kg. It felt incredible to overreach a goal!

I feel grateful – grateful that my body still allowed me to lose weight so quickly, and grateful that the Transformation Challenge gave me the much-needed kick in my arse to get my sh#t together and start over again.”

My advice: trust in your perseverance
